Emergency care

If you are affected by an emergency, every minute counts and especially short distances: All our four practice locations in Lucerne, Sursee, Altdorf and Wohlen give you the security of receiving fast and targeted emergency care and treatment in the event of an ophthalmological emergency. In the event of an eye injury, sudden loss of vision or other situations that you perceive as acute and threatening, we are there for you.

Determination of eyeglasses and measurement of your visual acuity

at all practice locations

Visual acuity and spectacle lenses must be precisely matched. For this purpose, our opticians not only check your vision for distance and near, but also examine the eye muscle balance and measure any corneal curvature. Your exact eyeglass determination is performed manually by our opticians using the fitting glasses. We determine the refractive power of the eyes using computer-assisted measurement methods. Afterwards, you wear a pair of trial glasses. This gives us the final certainty as to which glasses you really need: near or distance glasses, bifocals, trifocals or varifocals.

Preventive eye examinations

at all practice locations

Like everywhere else in medicine, the following also applies to ophthalmology: prevention is better than cure. A regular check-up of your eye health for defective vision and possible eye diseases offers you optimal protection of your eyes into old age. Our team of doctors therefore recommends a preventive eye examination every three years. Our preventive examinations at all four of our locations in Lucerne, Sursee, Altdorf and Wohlen include a comprehensive screening of your eyes: a vision test, measurement of intraocular pressure, inspection of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye, squint test and filter test for early detection of any changes in your visual system. Often, age-related or pathological impairments of your eye health, such as defective vision, glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure), cataracts (clouding of the eye lens) or macular degeneration (deterioration of the photoreceptors on the retina), can be detected and treated at an early stage.

General, modern eye diagnostics

Thanks to state-of-the-art eye diagnostics, our medical teams can now diagnose and treat age-related and pathological impairments to your eye health at an early stage. This means that therapy can be started early, which is more promising, more cost-efficient and less time-consuming. To the general, modern eye diagnostics we include:

• Background eye examinations: Retinal imaging for early diagnosis of optic nerve, macular and retinal diseases.
• Field of vision measurements (perimetry): The measurement of the 180 degree field of vision by means of projection and the detection of light points.
• Diagnosis of color vision deficiencies: Early detection of green vision deficiencies, red-green vision deficiencies.

Thanks to the constant development of diagnostic methods in ophthalmology, age-related and pathological changes in your eye health can nowadays be detected and specifically treated at an ever earlier stage. We offer you the most modern diagnostic and treatment methods of an eye clinic for this purpose:

• OCT examination (optical coherence tomography): Via computer scan, the retinal layers of your eyes are examined for diagnosis and early detection of eye diseases.
• Fluorescence angiography: is an imaging procedure for diagnosing diseases of the back of the eye. With the pupil dilated with medication, the flow and distribution of a suitable dye in the vascular system of the eye is documented, which serves as a contrast medium. In this way, vascular anomalies and diseases of the eye (e.g. ocular thrombosis) can be detected and treated at an early stage. Often, vascular abnormalities of the eye are associated with diabetes disease.
• HRT measurements: is an ophthalmic laser-based diagnostic procedure used to examine the cornea and specific areas of the retina. The most commonly used application of HRT is the inspection of the optic disc (optic disc) for early detection and follow-up of glaucoma

Pediatric consultation/vision school for children with refractive errors

at all practice locations

The early detection of visible or hidden strabismus in children, the restriction of spatial vision or angle refraction is of particular importance. Untreated refractive errors in childhood can lead to lifelong amblyopia, which may also affect the choice of profession.
In our vision school, our orthoptists examine visual acuity, ocular motility, the cooperation of both eyes (spatial vision) and the squint angle. In addition, other symptoms and complaints such as double vision and eye tremor are also clarified here. Our medical team recommends that you have abnormalities such as squinting, head misalignment, eye tremor, headaches, reading disorders or squinting of your child's eyes examined. A regular, preventive examination is also recommended for children with a family history of strabismus, such as those who wear glasses or have a family history of strabismus.

Driver's license eye test

At all four of our locations in Lucerne, Sursee, Altdorf and Wohlen, we offer you the determination and testing of your daytime visual acuity and other visual functions (visual field, ocular motility, color vision, spatial vision), specifically geared to the ophthalmological requirements of an eye test for obtaining a driver's license.

Contact lens consultation, fitting and fitting

at all practice locations

We inform, advise and adjust you individually to your contact lenses. After a careful examination of your eyes, we will find the appropriate contact lens materials and types for you. For optimal visual performance and wearing comfort, it is imperative to take into account general and specific corneal curvatures and other pathological eye changes in addition to refractive error. Our team of doctors recommends that you visit your ophthalmologist for check-ups every six months for soft contact lenses and once a year for dimensionally stable lenses. In case of redness or pain, please consult your ophthalmologist immediately.

Laser treatment for retinal changes

Following the diagnosis of a pathological change in the retina, we offer treatment of peripheral retinal tears and degenerations of the retina using an argon laser at all four locations.

Surgical treatment of cataracts

Cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. Such opacities can be congenital or develop at any age due to accidents, side effects of medications or general diseases. By far the most common, however, is senile cataract, which forms slowly as an expression of the natural aging process. The cataract can cause different symptoms depending on its form and severity, mainly reduced visual acuity, fog-like veil vision, increasing myopia with age, increased glare and shadowy double vision. In most cases, the clouded lens is surgically replaced with an artificial lens implant.

Surgical treatment of glaucoma

Glaucoma is not a single disease, but a group of diseases. What they all have in common is that in the course of time there is increasing damage to the optic nerve. This leads to a progressive restriction of the visual field. Risk factors for the development of glaucoma are increased intraocular pressure, aging, family history or diabetes. The central concern in the surgical treatment of glaucoma is the reduction of intraocular pressure. The ARGUS Eye team of doctors recommends: From the age of 40, have regular eye examinations by an ophthalmologist for early detection of glaucoma.

Intravitreal injections

This refers to the direct administration of a drug or liquid or suspension into the vitreous humor of the eye. Intravitreal injection is commonly used to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Outpatient Retinal and Vitreous Surgery (Pars Plana Vitrectomy).

We are proud to be the first ophthalmology practice in central Switzerland to perform outpatient, microsurgical procedures on the retina and vitreous body at our surgery site in Lucerne. Thanks to the latest surgical technology and intensive, personal care, you can save yourself an inpatient hospital stay. All types of surgery on the retina and vitreous body are performed by our experienced team of specialists, led by Dr. Steffen H. Schicke and Dr. Bernhard Amerian. Here, all diseases affecting the retina and the vitreous body of the eye are treated microsurgically, in particular retinal detachments, retinal changes in diabetes mellitus, arterial and venous vascular occlusions, peripheral retinal degenerations, vitreous detachment and clouding as well as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Medically indicated eyelid surgery

At our practice location in Lucerne, the medical team also corrects medically indicated eyelid surgery. This refers to eyelid disorders and eyelid malpositions whose surgical correction is not only cosmetically desirable, but medically necessary. The most common are: Inflammatory or pathological changes of the eyelid, inward rolling of the lower eyelid (entropion), outward tilting of the lower eyelid (ectropion), lacrimation due to tilting of the lacrimal drainage punctum, drooping of the upper eyelid due to muscle/tendon disorders.

Cosmetic-aesthetic eyelid surgery

At our practice location in Lucerne, our team of doctors operates on the most common cosmetic eyelid malpositions. In cosmetic eyelid malpositions, surgical correction is aesthetically desirable but not medically necessary. Cosmetic eyelid correction is most commonly performed for: Droopy eyelids, sagging eyelids, "puffy eyes" and "bags under the eyes".

Conjunctival surgery

The conjunctiva separates the cornea from the outside. It is a mucous membrane that is transparent and relatively thin. It is only loosely attached to the eyeball. At the edges, it is firmly fused to the eyelids. At our practice location in Lucerne, our team of doctors operates on pathological conjunctival changes. The most common disease of the conjunctiva is infectious conjunctivitis or conjunctivitis.

Strabismus surgery

At our practice location in Lucerne, our team of doctors surgically corrects malpositions of the eyeball. The surgical goal is to shift the eyeballs into a position in which spatial vision is possible again without problems (functional indication) or the eye position is cosmetically satisfactory (cosmetic indication).

ARTISAN/ARTIFLEX lens implantations

These permanent lens implants are implanted at our location in Lucerne by specially qualified ophthalmologists. Artisan and Artiflex lenses are ultra-thin contact lenses. They are implanted in the eye to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and cylinder deviations. The lenses are attached to the iris with two clips and remain permanently in the eye. Artisan and Artiflex lenses are designed for those who value sharp and clear vision, but do not want to rely on glasses or contact lenses. The advantages of this method are, besides the harmless operation method, the effective handling (no more changing of lenses), excellent improvement of vision, even with strong deviations in the plus and minus range, as well as the reversibility of the treatment.

Astigmatic keratotomy

In astigmatic keratotomy, the ARGUS Eye team of doctors at the Lucerne location operates on the so-called astigmatism. Also known as astigmatism, a particular refractive error of the eye. In this surgical-refractive procedure, deep, usually paired incisions are made to attenuate high, regular corneal curvatures, and this is also achieved.

Clear lens exchange (early cataract surgery)

In the case of particularly high refractive errors or a corneal thickness that is rather too narrow for laser correction, laser correction of the refractive error alone is no longer the ideal approach. In the course of this so-called lens exchange surgery, the patient's own lens is exchanged for an artificial lens. One tends to such a complete exchange of the lenses in particular with high long-sightedness or age-related lens opacities. This procedure takes no longer than 15 minutes with our experienced ArgusAugen surgeons and is usually performed under local anesthesia.
