Laser treatment

Refractive surgery uses an Excimer laser (phase 2) to modify the anterior curve of the cornea (the transparent part of the eye's surface). It enables us to permanently correct the vision of patients whose eyes have an optical defect: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and, more recently, presbyopia in hyperopic patients.

Free screening

A screening consultation is carried out at the Vision Center by appointment. It is designed to assess your vision deficiency and look for any contraindications to such surgery.

It consists of :

• an assessment of your vision
• an assessment of your corneal topography (Orbscan 2)
• an assessment of your eligibility for surgery
• an explanation of the surgery

During this consultation, you will be given all the information you need to know about your surgery, as well as an explanatory document. Following the screening, it is now possible to schedule the pre-operative consultation.

Pre-operative consultation

This examination enables us to get to know you better, so that we can suggest the most appropriate surgery. The consultation lasts two hours, during which the surgeon and his team carry out a thorough examination:

• Evaluation of your vision (with and without dillatation)
• Corneal topography (mapping of the anterior and posterior surface of the cornea)
• Pachymetry (corneal thickness)
• Aberrometry (optical aberration measurements)
• Score (screening of at-risk corneas)
• Fundus (examination of all the media in your eye) and eye pressure measurement
• Pupillometry (examination to evaluate the reaction of your pupils to different light intensities)

Together with your surgeon, you will choose the appropriate surgical technique:

• the nature and strength of your visual defect
• the curvature and thickness of your cornea
• your age
• your activities
• your ophthalmological history

If the operation is feasible, an operation date can be set. You will be given all the information you need about your operation, and you will receive explanatory documents. You will be given pre- and post-operative treatment.

Procedure

On arrival, you will be given a relaxant. Anesthesia is provided simply by instilling eye drops that numb the surface of the eye. You lie comfortably under the laser device.

A small retractor holds your eyelids open, and the procedure can proceed according to the method you have chosen. The first phase is performed (PRK or Lasik or Femtosecond Lasik). The second phase consists of reshaping the curvature of your cornea with the laser, according to your correction and objectives. All you have to do is focus on a point of light for the few minutes required for treatment. Thanks to the Eye-Traker, the laser follows the micromovements of the eye during treatment, ensuring perfect precision.

The third phase is flap repositioning for Lasik and Femtosecond Lasik. For PRK, a protective lens is fitted for 3 days. The same procedure is then applied to the other eye. You will be provided with protective eyewear as soon as you leave the operating room.

Procedure after surgery

After the operation, you will receive post-operative recommendations. Your vision will be blurred for a few minutes, then improve hour by hour. For Lasik and Femtosecond Lasik, we recommend that you return home accompanied and resume normal activity the following day, depending on how you feel. For PRK, we advise you to remain calm for 2 to 3 days. Your vision will fluctuate during this time, and in different ways between the two eyes.

Results

Recovery is rapid within 12 hours of the operation for Lasik and Femtosecond Lasik. Recovery for PRK takes place within a week of the operation, with visual fluctuations.

In hyperopic and presbyopic patients, recovery is slower. Recovery is almost immediate for near vision, but stabilization of distance vision may take a few weeks or even months. Since complete stabilization may take some time, a slight temporary correction may be prescribed for distance vision.
